May 2014

This trip was for the Leeds RSPB group and we had a pretty fine time with good weather and lots of birds:

Many were nesting very close to the road.

Squacco Heron in the Coto Donana

We saw four rare Red-knobbed Coots on our 2010 trip. This was the most obliging.

Azure-winged Magpies are seen in big numbers in both areas we visit.

Picnic near Los Palacios

Great Reed Warbler singing outside our hotel in El Rocio. We can see them whilst eating our breakfast!

The heronry at Valverde contained Squaccos, Cattle Egrets, Little Egrets and Glossy Ibis. The latter have increased tremendously in the last few years.

Collared Pratincole at Brazo del Este.

Flowers carpet the Alentejo at this time of year.

The pretty town of Mertola has nesting White Storks and Lesser Kestrels.

An adult White Stork shades its chicks.

At Pulo do Lobo (Wolf leap!) we can see a different range of birds including Blue Rock Thrush and Rock Bunting (below).
